of blow torches and brulee

My friend F (hola!) has loaned me her culinary blow torch, for making creme brulees, as well as these lovely traditional Spanish earthenware pots.

Besides creme brulee, what other culinary uses can I put the blow torch to?

I've never used one before - do you have any tips or techniques? You know, how not to set the kitchen bench alight...

And can you recommend a brilliant brulee recipe?

  1. Blow torches are so much fun (in the kitchen!) I got one for Xmas. I've only used it once and made mini lemon meringue tarts with perfectly bronzed tops. Just go gently-gently when you first use it and then you'll very quickly get the hang of it. Enjoy!

  2. They always look like so much fun. Lemon Meringue? You lightly burn the top of the meringue, yes? x

    1. ha, i haven't been game to use it yet... i'm going to try it when i'm visiting my parents. for some reason, i think since dad can weld, he'll be able to give me pointers. i know that doesn't make sense, but i've never claimed to be logical!
